Pankaj Jalote
2025 Distinguished Academic Achievement Alumni Award
Pankaj Jalote is the founding Director (from 2008 to 2018) of IIIT-Delhi, where he is currently a Distinguished Professor. He received a PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1985. His research interests are in software engineering, AI for software engineering, and higher education.
Jalote is an author of many books. His books CMM in Practice (Addison Wesley), and Software Project Management in Practice (Addison Wesley) were highly acclaimed and translated into many languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and French. His textbook on Software Engineering (Springer) and its Indian Edition were awarded the best-selling Computer Science book prize by the publisher. Fault Tolerance in Distributed Systems (Prentice Hall) was the first graduate-level book in the area. A Concise Introduction to Software Engineering has been revised with the subtitle: Using Open Source and GenAI (Springer, 2025; Indian edition published by Wiley India).
He has been a keen observer of higher education and research, has written over 40 opinion articles in leading newspapers, has a blog Higher Education in India (jalote.wordpress.com), and has authored Building Research Universities in India.
