Pen-Chung Yew

2023 Distinguished Academic Achievement Alumni Award

Pen-Chung Yew earned his PhD from the Illinois Computer Science Department in 1981, and is a Professor of the Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, after serving as faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an Associate Director of the Center for Supercomputing Research and Development (CSRD) at UIUC.

His research areas cover computer architectures and compilers targeting current and future generation of secure and high-performance parallel systems. He was one of the main system designers for the Cedar system built at CSRD in 1980’s.

Yew served as the Program Director of the Microelectronic Systems Architecture (MSA) Program in the Division of Microelectronic Information Processing Systems (MIPS) in National Science Foundation, the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the William Norris Land-Grant Chair Professor in the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, and the Director of the Institute of Information Science (IIS) in Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He has also served as the Program Chair or the General Chair of several major conferences in computer architecture and system areas, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
