Research Mentor
Prof. Jimeng Sun

Research/Engagement Experience
I conducted research under Professor Roxana Girju on natural language processing in the past, and am currently working with a group of students on a self-directed project for an AI research competition. I'm also a leader in Women in Cybersecurity, where I help coordinate our yearly EOH project.

Interests
I'm interested in the application of AI/ML to neuroscience and cognitive science, and the healthcare field as a whole as well. There's a lot of potential for artificial intelligence to parse through the kind of data we've been grappling with for years and give us the tools to interpret and take action on it, and I'm excited to see how that field progresses.

Project Title
Knowledge-Infused Synthetic Patient Profile Generation

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
I got exposed to computer science in high school. I had an impression of programming as just typing away at a keyboard and doing repetitive tasks, so I wasn't expecting much out of my first class, but I quickly realized there was so much more to it. The process of fitting puzzle pieces together to make something function how I wanted it to really appealed to me, and I got more and more into it until I became committed to the field.

What social interests matter to me?
I care a lot about environmental issues, racial disparities, gender gaps, and many similar parts of today's society, and have taken action on each of them. The issue I'm most concerned with, however, is class inequity and poverty, because I believe it exacerbates and reinforces many of the other problems that pervade society. Resolving the systematic issues that maintain class separation requires a complex and multifaceted approach, but it's something that needs to be done.

What is my most impactful college experience?
This will fall under more shocking, but one of my professors pulling out a knife in class and using it as a pointer. That professor was also my favorite in my entire college experience and was an amazing lecturer, so it's more a fond memory than anything, but it definitely left an impact on me.

These are a few of my favorite things!
Reading, Hiking, and Baking! I love finding new and challenging experiences in the outdoors, and I read on a daily basis: I'm always up for recommendations. I also have gotten good at adapting recipes to make sweet treats for people with dietary needs!

Research Description
My research is focused on the integration of clinical and structural knowledge with the temporal generation of synthetic patient profiles. These patient profiles are deidentified, can be created with specified demographic information, and can be used as input to future big data models.

Biography
I grew up in a lot of places. I cycled through Washington, Tennessee, Ohio, and India until I finally settled in Illinois. I'm from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, about an hour away from the city.
