How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My interest in Computer Science sparked in high school during my first hackathon. While I had been learning the basics of Java for a couple of years, this event gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and apply those skills. I really enjoyed being creative when working on complex problems and crafting my own solutions.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois because of primarily two reasons. Firstly, the CS+X programs allowed me to combine my passion for programming with my interest in Econometrics. I got the opportunity to study the intersection between these two fields and learn how they can impact each other. Secondly, it was the people. Everyone I talked to had been extremely welcoming which made me certain that I would feel at home here.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I am passionate about advancing DEI in STEM and promoting both educational and health equity.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
My most impactful college experience has been serving as the Co-Director of the annual tech conference Reflections | Projections in 2024. This role allowed me to grow in ways that I never expected. It helped me become more confident as a leader and decision-maker. But more than that, the sense of community I gained has been the most meaningful aspect. Being surrounded by peers who are just as passionate about making a difference in tech has been incredibly inspiring.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
As a CS STAR, one of my favorite experiences has been participating in Trick or Research. It's a really fun way to discuss your research and also have the opportunity to learn more what everyone is working on!

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
Spending time with family and friends, dancing to Bollywood music, reading books, watching tennis and trying out new desserts!

Biography
Ritika is a Senior majoring in Computer Science and Economics with a minor in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Hailing from Kolkata, India, she is involved on campus with the Habitat for Humanity Student Chapter and the annual tech conference Reflections | Projections. Ritika is passionate about working in the data engineering field and aims to leverage her skills to drive innovation and create positive change in the industry.
