Project Title

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My first experience with Computer Science was when I completed the “Hour of Code” program through Khan Academy in middle school. I really enjoyed the creative aspects of coding and how I was able to “draw” pictures with code. Then, through taking structured CS courses at my high school I learned the diverse capabilities and real-world uses of code. Through experiencing both the analytical and creative sides of programming I realized I wanted to pursue Computer Science.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois because of the balance between innovation and community. I love how driven and ambitious the students are and they still make time to enjoy campus life and participate in the many fun activities offered. I was also drawn to all the opportunities which provide research experiences and chances to engage with esteemed alumni and industry leaders.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I am passionate about art and design. I’ve always loved drawing, painting, movies, and music. I’m also deeply passionate about social impact, particularly in advancing equality and addressing climate change. I volunteer with nonprofits and hope to use the knowledge and skills I gain in college to help drive meaningful social change in these areas.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
My favorite experiences at Illinois were going to football games, especially Homecoming, and seeing all the orange spirit all over the campus.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
My favorite experience was the Trick or Research where I got to see all the cool research my peers were doing, which inspired me to do more research.

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
Music, concerts, drawing, movies, coffee, chocolate, cats, and walking outside in nature!

Biography
My name is Andrea Turek and I am a sophomore at UIUC studying Statistics and Computer Science. I was born in Canada but moved to the suburbs of Chicago at a young age. I have always loved art in every form (drawing, movies, music, etc.) and I love how I can use my creativity for Computer Science. Today, I bring that same creativity to computer science, using it as a tool to design innovative solutions and uncover insights in data. As a Statistics and Computer Science student at UIUC, my goal is to explore the intersection between data processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to solve complex problems in fields like healthcare, finance, and education. I’m especially interested in data analytics and AI-driven decision-making, where I can combine my analytical skills with creativity to make an impact.
