Project Title
How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My interest in computer science began in middle school when I first started creating simple games with Scratch. This early experience, combined with my love for mathematics, led me to explore programming further in high school.
What social interests matter to me?
Equity in tech and encouraging young girls in STEM are social interests that deeply matter to me.
What is my most impactful college experience?
One of my most impactful experiences was attending the admitted day for women in computer science, where I discovered the CS STARS program.

Research Description
Biography
Mayumi is a freshman majoring in Computer Science from Wilmette, IL. Her passion for mathematics began in high school, where she was an active member of the math team and a dedicated tutor at Mathnasium. Her interest in coding grew through her involvement with Girls Who Code and her role as a Teaching Assistant in programming courses at Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development. Mayumi is also the founder of SKATE (Solving Kinesthetically and Transforming Education), a nonprofit that merges figure skating with mathematics, empowering young girls to succeed in STEM. She looks forward to continuing this work at UIUC.
