Project Title

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My interest in computer science began in high school during a math modeling competition. I led a team that worked on predicting ocean temperature and carbon dioxide levels. To tackle the problem, we collected large datasets, wrote scripts to clean and analyze the data, and tested different models. That experience introduced me to the power of computing for solving real-world problems. It was the first time I saw how programming and data analysis could turn raw information into meaningful insights—and how computer science could amplify the kind of logical thinking and problem-solving I already loved in mathematics.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois for its top-ranked computer science program, strong research opportunities, and vibrant, diverse campus community.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I like keeping up with the news and reading books. I care about what’s happening in different parts of the world and enjoy learning about other places and cultures.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
Last semester, I was part of the WaggleNet research team, where I worked on assessing beehive health using machine learning models. It is both educating and fun.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)

Biography
I'm a rising sophomore at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, majoring in Computer Science with plans to dual degree in mathematics. I am from China, I grew up Yichang, a city near the Yangtze river, the third longest river in the world. In high school, I explored my interest in computer science through competition, leadership roles in STEM clubs and group projects, where I gained hands-on experience with real-world applications of computing. Looking ahead, I hope to become an AI researcher.
