How did I get interested in Computer Science?
I first got interested in Computer Science after doing a science fair project on SQL injections. I was fascinated by how something as simple as typing a few lines of code could have such a powerful impact—like exposing vulnerabilities in websites. That experience opened my eyes to the world of cybersecurity and the broader possibilities of computing. I continued exploring CS through high school classes and discovered how coding could be used not just to solve problems, but also to build things from scratch. As AI started becoming more prominent, I became even more intrigued by how computer science could shape the future, and I knew I wanted to be part of it.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois due to the amazing Computer Science program that it had as well as the proximity to my home. I also knew many people who went to Illinois and had great experiences here!

What are your passions outside of computing?
Hiking, Drawing, Reading, Traveling, Dancing

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
One of my favorite experiences at Illinois has been spending time on the Main Quad and Union. It’s not only a beautiful place to study or relax, but it’s also the heart of campus life—there are always events, people hanging out, and something going on. Whether you're catching up with friends, attending a student event, or just taking a break between classes, the Quad and Union are always full of energy. Plus, it’s just steps away from Green Street.

Biography
Hi, I’m Vaani, a sophomore in Computer Science from Peoria, Illinois. I’m passionate about exploring the intersection of AI and bioinformatics, and I’m excited by the potential of technology to solve real-world problems and improve lives. Outside of academics, I love spending time with family and friends, especially when we’re playing board games, going on hikes, or just relaxing together. I also enjoy reading and drawing as personal creative outlets. I’m dedicated to helping others discover and explore the field of computer science through outreach and mentorship.
