Project Title

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My interest in Computer Science began in primary school during a computer class where we started using a language called Scratch to code small games. Then, I realized I could use computers to create anything I imagined, much like building with LEGO, but with far fewer physical limitations and much greater possibilities. This discovery sparked my passion for the field.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose UIUC because it’s widely recognized as one of the top universities for Computer Science. Also, as an international student, I was also drawn to its inclusive and diverse academic and research community, which fosters a supportive environment for learning and growth.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I'm passionate about sports—I enjoy both playing and watching a variety of them. I also find joy in cooking, especially experimenting with new recipes.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
One of my favorite parts of being a CS STAR is the opportunity to connect with people who share similar interests and goals. It brings together a community of students who are passionate about research and eager to grow. Many of my friends were made through STAR. Since research and daily studies can sometimes be frustrating or challenging, having supportive peers around has made a big difference.

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
Tennis, badminton, cooking, and playing Nintendo games.

Biography
Hi! My name is Linna Niu, and I’m a senior majoring in Computer Science and Statistics. My research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction, particularly in the context of education. Over the past few years, I’ve been working with Professor Brian Bailey’s group to develop a dashboard that helps improve the fairness of peer evaluation in group projects. I’m an only child, but I share my home with my cat, Sophia—despite her grumpy face, she’s the sweetest angel in the world!
