How did I get interested in Computer Science?

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois because it offers the best of both worlds—top-notch academics and a vibrant, welcoming campus culture. UIUC’s highly ranked Computer Science program and incredible research opportunities were a huge draw for me, but what really stood out was the overall experience it offers. From hackathons and tech clubs to fun events on the Quad, there’s always something exciting to be part of. The community here is collaborative and supportive, making it easy to connect with people who share my passions. Plus, the strong alumni network and resources makes UIUC a place where I can truly grow and thrive.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I'm passionate about staying active through sports such as badminton and swimming. These activities provide opportunities to unwind while keeping me physically fit. Additionally, I have a love for baking, experimenting with new recipes allows me to express my creativity and share treats with friends and family. Painting is another hobby I cherish as it offers me a relaxing and imaginative outlet. These pursuits enrich my life by offering a perfect blend of relaxation, creativity, and social connection beyond the digital world.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
One of my favorite experiences at Illinois has been finding a sense of home as an international student. Leaving my family and moving to a new country was both exciting and overwhelming, but the supportive campus community at UIUC made the transition so much easier. From the welcoming orientation events to the friendly classmates and professors, I always felt like I belonged here. Getting involved with clubs, hackathons, and events on the Quad helped me meet people who quickly became close friends. What stood out the most was how everyone is willing to help and encourage you, whether it’s with academics or just adjusting to campus life. This sense of community has made my journey at Illinois truly special.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
One of my favorite experiences as a CS STARS scholar has been participating in Trick or Research, the department-wide event where STARS members showcase research projects to the broader CS community. Being part of this was energizing—not only did I get to present my work, I also saw the incredible range of research fellow students are doing across areas like AI, interactive computing, and compilers. Through CS STARS, I’ve had the chance to do meaningful research while also contributing to outreach and mentorship. It’s been truly rewarding to help organize activities for prospective students, work alongside faculty mentors, and build a tight-knit cohort of driven peers. The program provides a perfect balance of leadership, research, and community—empowering me, and others, to grow both academically and in confidence.

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
Some of my favorite things are baking and painting—I love experimenting with new recipes or playing with colors on a canvas. I enjoy playing badminton and swimming because they keep me active and are a fun way to clear my mind. I’m also into mystery novels and documentaries that make me think in new ways. Something a bit unique is my love for stargazing; I find it calming to look up at the night sky and spot constellations. Whether it’s baking something sweet or diving into a good book, I enjoy simple things that spark creativity and curiosity.
