How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My interest in computer science started in 6th grade when I joined Stanford’s Girls Learning Environment and Energy Program. I was tracking my household’s energy use with a smart plug and got curious about how the data was being collected and sent to my phone. That curiosity led me to learn more about the Internet of Things, and soon after, I started learning how to code inPython. Over time, I realized how powerful data can be,not just for tracking energy use, but for solving bigger problems too. I’ve explored that through an AI project that predicts crop yields and detects plant diseases. These experiences have shown me how computer science can have a real-world impact.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose UIUC because I really liked the option of majoring in both Statistics and Computer Science, since both subjects perfectly match my interests. I’ve always been drawn to both the problem-solving side of computer science and the analytical thinking behind statistics, and this major allows me to explore both in depth. UIUC’s strong reputation in both fields, along with its collaborative and innovative environment, made it the ideal place for me to grow academically.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I’m passionate about working with underprivileged and neurodiverse communities. Throughout high school, I volunteered with Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN), which has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life. I’ve taught math and coding, led art camps, and helped create a welcoming space where kids feel seen and supported. These experiences have helped me become more empathetic, patient, and confident, and they’ve shown me how important it is to make education and friendship accessible to everyone, no matter their abilities.

Biography
My name is Aliya Ahmad and I am majoring in Computer Science & Statistics at UIUC. I am from Fremont, California. I became interested in computer science because I am interested in exploring how to use data and technology to solve real-world problems. I’ve worked on projects involving AI models for crop yield prediction and plant disease detection. Outside of academics, I enjoy running and hiking, or just hanging out with friends.
