How did I get interested in Computer Science?
I developed an interest in computer science after taking a summer class during my freshman year of high school. Learning about how AI systems were being used to make decisions and assist people sparked my curiosity about the field and motivated me to explore it further. I became eager to understand how these technologies work, how they can be improved, and how they can be utilized to solve real-world problems.
What social interests matter to me?
Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois because attending the Society of Hispanic Engineers Admitted Student visitation during my senior year gave me a firsthand look at the welcoming and supportive community within the Computer Science program! Meeting students and professors with similar backgrounds and hearing about their experiences made me feel confident that UIUC was the right place for me to grow both academically and personally. Additionally, given its strong reputation, it felt like a great environment to develop my skills and learn from experienced professionals on the path to becoming a software engineer.
What are your passions outside of computing?
I genuinely love content creation and media editing—whether it’s filming fun TikToks for my friends, designing eye-catching posters for program social media, or learning how to edit websites. I’ve been lucky to explore these creative skills through exciting roles outside of school, and I’m always eager to keep learning more!
What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
Getting connected with B[U]ILT, an RSO on campus, has helped me find a community of people who share similar experiences and helps combat the impostor syndrome I sometimes experience. Through B[U]ILT, I’ve also met many role models who inspire me to challenge stereotypes.
What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
I enjoy the community events hosted by CS STARS, especially during finals week, where we come together to give CS students a chance to take a break from studying and enjoy a quick snack like cookies or sandwiches. It’s one of my favorite moments because it creates a supportive and relaxed atmosphere when everyone really needs it most.
What is my most impactful college experience?
These are a few of my favorite things!
I like baking, playing badminton, listening to Karol G, and eating chocolate croissants with matcha or chai lattes!
