How did I get interested in Computer Science?
I like finding the connections between things! When reading about algorithms and problem solutions, I was fascinated by the deftness of the connections in computer science. Within CS, I loved the efficiency and capability of code. As I moved onto programming myself, I found satisfaction in problem solving and in seeing the tangible impact of what my work can have.
What social interests matter to me?
Why did you choose Illinois?
At Illinois, I found a unique degree where I could explore the structures of language, develop a strong understanding computer science, and examine their intersection--plus a great community of likeminded peers.
What are your passions outside of computing?
Listening to music, reading, and staying up late.
What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
Campus events like the Tesla Coil Concert during the Engineering Open House made for a great night with friends!
What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
When Parisa Tabriz came in to speak! Her reflections on her career and her life reminded me to do my best and made me feel more confident about my place in computer science.

Biography
I’m Ashley, a sophomore studying Computer Science and Linguistics at UIUC! I grew up near Seattle surrounded by technology, books, and rain. I’ve always loved to learn and will read just about anything. Through my major, I aim to examine the intersection of language and technology.
