Project Title

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
Since I was a toddler, I was fascinated by technology and how the web worked. I built my first computer in 6th grade and naturally progressed to learning about the software behind the hardware. This showed me the endless possibilities and applications of Computer Science and inspired me to pursue it in college and beyond.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois for its energy. The university has a work-hard, play-hard mentality—driven students who push themselves academically, but also know how to build community and enjoy the college experience. That balance really stood out to me and made Illinois the right fit.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Beyond computing, I enjoy music, basketball, lifting, and meditation. I’m equally passionate about supporting underrepresented communities in engineering, which has driven my involvement in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Black, Indigenous, and Latinx in Tech (B[U]ILT).

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
One of my favorite experiences at Illinois was preparing for my first career fair. Between resources from the College and support from my clubs, I learned how to build a strong resume, practice an elevator pitch, and gain confidence in selling myself. The biggest thing I took away was that people here genuinely want you to succeed, and they are willing to dedicate their time and energy to help you grow.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
I love playing instruments, especially guitar, and more recently, the piano. I'll never get tired of watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. On campus, my favorite food is Shawarma Joint. I also love to learn and enjoy meeting new people.

Biography
My name is Josh Montalvo. Right now, I'm a sophomore studying Computer Science conducting research in motion planning and reinforcement learning. I'm super interested in Machine Learning, and I'm dedicated to learning about its unique applications, like robotics. I'm involved with SHPE and BUILT, which have been great opportunities for me to become a better leader and event coordinator. Outside of class, I love playing the guitar and hanging out with my friends.
