How did I get interested in Computer Science?
My first exposure to Computer Science was through AP CSA, an introductory Java course for high schoolers. As someone who has always loved math and puzzles, I was instantly drawn to the problem-solving nature of programming. That experience sparked my interest, and I’ve enjoyed continuing to explore the field here at UIUC.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
UIUC has a top-ranked CS program that works to strengthen minority groups in tech. As an African-American woman, finding a school where I felt supported was very important, and UIUC has truly lived up to that. Additionally, coming from a small suburban town, being here has exposed me to a world of opportunities and diverse perspectives. Meeting people with different experiences has not only taught me so much but has also helped me shape my own future.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I’m passionate about making education more accessible. Last semester, I joined a research team that created coding lessons for elementary, middle, and high school students. I loved the chance to mentor younger students, and it was incredibly rewarding to think I might help spark the same excitement for computer science in them that I felt when I first started.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
One of the best things about UIUC is how you can find a community for almost anything you’re curious about. Last semester, I took a world music course, and it completely shifted how I think about music. We learned about how sounds and styles used in the U.S. often take inspiration from non-Western cultures. It made me realize that even the simple songs we hear in the media can carry a much deeper history than we realize.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
My favorite experience as a CS STAR has been joining a new community within the Computer Science Department. This program gave me my first real experience in research, but even beyond that, it’s been great to connect with people across different projects. I’ve gotten to know so many familiar faces, and that sense of community makes a big difference in a school as large as UIUC.

What is my most impactful college experience?

These are a few of my favorite things!
I love to read, play logic games, and listen to new music.
