Project Title
How did I get interested in Computer Science?
Growing up in Nepal, I looked forward to just one thing every week: a 60-minute computer class. In a life shaped by distance - first from my parents, who were working in the U.S., and later from the sense of belonging after permanently moving to a new country - that one hour grounded me. It gave me a glimpse into a world where I could build, create, and think freely. It sparked what later became a passion for computer science.
What social interests matter to me?
Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose UIUC because of its nationally recognized CS program and the incredible opportunities available to undergraduates, from research to student organizations. I wanted a place that would challenge me academically while also encouraging exploration beyond the classroom. UIUC’s strong community, resources, and culture of innovation made it feel like the right fit for both my personal and professional growth.
What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I’m passionate about giving back to my community and creative expression. Whether it’s volunteering, drawing, or playing badminton, I like activities that let me connect with people and contribute to the society.
What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
What is my most impactful college experience?
These are a few of my favorite things!
Exploring new coffee shops, late-night conversations with my sister, the excitement of learning something new in class and finally ‘getting it,’ volunteering within my community, and ending the day with icecream.

Biography
I was born and raised in Dharan, Nepal, where I developed a strong curiosity for problem-solving and technology. After moving to the US, I built a bus app to help students in my community, which made me realize how computer science can directly improve people’s daily lives. Later, I explored AI governance and policy, which further deepened my interest in how technology shapes society. Along the way, my family has always encouraged me to pursue my own path, and their support continues to inspire me as I combine my passion for computer science with a drive to create meaningful impact.
