Project Title

How did I get interested in Computer Science?
I got interested in Computer Science after taking the introductory CS classes and realizing how powerful it is as a tool to solve real problems. I was especially drawn to the combination of logical problem-solving and creativity, and to how CS can be applied across many domains. This interest ultimately helped me decide to transfer into the CS + Linguistics program, where I could combine technical skills with a focus on human-centered technology.

What social interests matter to me?

Why did you choose Illinois?
I chose Illinois because of its strong programs in both Computer Science and Linguistics, its collaborative and diverse community, and the wide range of research and internship opportunities available to students.

What are your passions outside of computing?
Outside of computing, I’m interested in language, communication, and how people express meaning. I enjoy learning about linguistics, cultural perspectives, and ethics, and I’m drawn to activities that involve mentorship, community building, and helping others navigate academic and career decisions.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at Illinois that you would like to share with prospective students? (For Continuing UIUC Students)
One of my favorite experiences at Illinois has been joining the Philharmonia Orchestra. Being part of a large, collaborative group allowed me to continue my passion for music, meet new people, and develop my skills. It added a creative outlet that made my college life more balanced and enjoyable alongside academics.

What has been one of your favorite experiences as a CS STAR? (For Returning CS STARS)
One of my favorite experiences as a CS STAR was attending the Trick-or-Treat poster presentation and serving as a peer mentor. Both opportunities allowed me to connect with fellow students, share knowledge, and be part of a supportive, collaborative community.

Biography
HI! My name is Yunhan Chen and I a junior majoring in Computer Science & Linguistics from China. I became interested in computer science because I am fascinated by speech recognition and natural language processing. Outside of academics, I enjoy listening to music, exploring new places, and spending time with friends.
