CS professor Indranil Gupta was elevated to IEEE Fellow by the organization’s board of directors at its November 2024 meeting. Gupta was cited for his “contributions to reliable large-scale distributed systems.” His new status becomes effective on January 1, 2025.
As IEEE president and CEO Thomas M. Coughlin noted, “Recognizing the achievements of its members is an important part of the mission of IEEE. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.”
Gupta has made significant contributions to distributed systems in the last 25 years, specifically focusing on large-scale distributed systems such as data centers, cloud computing systems, peer-to-peer systems, the internet of things, and distributed machine learning. His work has impacted multi-billion-dollar companies and millions of users.
Gupta is also a leader in broadening access to instruction in distributed systems. He teaches the world's largest course on Distributed Systems. Offered via Coursera, his "Cloud Computing Concepts" courses (Parts 1 and 2) together have about 100K students annually and over 900K visitors since 2015. The course is used by companies and startups and taken by students of all ages across 198 countries.
Gupta’s contribution to broadening participation in computing activities is unique. He has a podcast on Immigrant Computer Scientists that features oral history interviews of prominent immigrant computer scientists, and it was ranked in the top 20% of podcasts worldwide recently. He has created viral Youtube videos on distributed systems study materials and the courses he teaches.
