At DASC 2025 PhD student Wentao Zhan co-advised by CS professors Darko Marinov and Tianyin Xu won First Place out of 239 papers at "The Best of" Conference Award for Digital Avionics Systems Conference for his first-author paper "An Open-Source Structural Coverage Tool for DO-178C Compliance" co-authored with collaborators from Boeing. Zhan has also given a series of talks with Boeing on Making Linux fly.

CS assistant professor Tianyin Xu and team have won the inaugural GenAI-accelerated TLA+ Challenge, sponsored by the TLA+ Foundation and NVIDIA. TLA+ is a formal specification language and corresponding toolchains for designing, modelling, documenting, and verifying programs, especially concurrent systems and distributed systems.

The paper "CXLfork: Fast Remote Fork over CXL Fabrics," by CS professors Tianyin Xu and Josep Torrellas, CS Postdoctoral Researcher Chloe Alverti, CS PhD students Burak Ocalan, Shashwat Jaiswal, and ECE PhD student Stratos Psomadakis, received the ASPLOS 2025 Best Paper Award, April 1, 2025 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Illinois computer science professor Tianyin Xu is a recipient of The Grainger College of Engineering's 2024 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research for Assistant Professor. Xu will be recognized formally at the Annual Engineering Awards Convocation in April.

Illinois CS faculty presented a record four papers at Mobicom 2023, including three by Deepak Vasisht’s group, with one from Indranil Gupta and one involving Tianyin Xu. The papers cover topics from satellite networking to human body localization, drone mobility without cameras, and mobile app testing. Vasisht gave the keynote at the first workshop on satellite communications.
